Why We Play Poker: Risks and Rewards
There are probably millions who play poker around the world in land-based casinos and millions more online. Though there are a lot of money risks involved in poker - in fact there are more losers than winners in the game as a whole - many people ask why we play poker still.
A popular reason is for social purposes. Players with this reason are mostly those who provide funds for poker pots that pros win. Some of us frequent poker tables in casinos for business contacts, as some do in golf where they hunt for business people to deal business with. If this is why we play poker, we should opt for low-limit poker for fun and socializing.
Entertainment is a popular reason for why we play poker. Other games which rely on pure luck are also exciting but nothing beats a card game of wits and skills. Winning out of luck does not challenge the mental faculties. But with poker we win by outdoing our opponents through psychology and strategizing for a win. In fact, proving our intellectual skills is mostly the reason why we play poker more than monetary winnings.
And this brings us to another reason why we play poker - to sharpen our wit. Poker involves a lot of mind processes as we deal with poker mathematical odds, poker psychology, sizing up opponents, some knotty detective works (hand-reading and detecting poker tells), and many more, especially when we play online. Online poker involves the use of poker software that use hi-tech surveillance and assessment tactics and procedures. These intellectual challenges are among the reasons why we play poker and try to be good at it.
Of course, we cannot discount the fact that a lot of people play poker for the money. But we should accept the fact that poker as a money maker is not for everyone. There are only two kinds of players in poker - the poker sharks and the poker fish. If we are proven to be poker fish, we better re-think why we play poker. If it is for entertainment, we should watch that we limit our play to the lowest possible minimum. If it's for the money, we should wake up and see that mediocre skill won't get us anywhere in the game.
Before we step into a casino or login online for a game of poker, we should always remind ourselves why we play poker. This determines how much we will invest, what table we will play at, and how we will play the game.
